Ryan Gagne Interview (The Q90.1)

Ryan Gagne

Each month, I.BSound Pro interviews a different local business owner, organization, or public figure to feature in our newsletter.  This month we interviewed Ryan Gagne, morning show host at The Q90.1.   Enjoy!

How old were you when you first saw interest in working on the radio?

I started in radio fresh out of high school at 19.

How did you first get involved in this line of work?

I always enjoyed listening to radio as a kid/teen.  I would always listen to Casey Kasem on the weekends.  I started volunteering for a local radio station in town that had just started.  After volunteering for 9 months, I was offered a full time job and I accepted!  i was there for 13 1/2 years!

What was the hardest part of your journey getting to where you are now?

Growing pains and patience.  Being a younger person, I was in an environment on how radio was done "old school"... The challenge was to educate owners/leaders that radio CAN be relevant for todays's listener.

When you first started at The Q90.1, what was your first impression?

A sense of the unknown.  This part of the state doesn't have a radio format like The Q90.1.  A 24/7 music station that focuses on Faith/Family/Fun.  I wasn't sure how this community would embrace it.  3+ years later, it's been very positive!

Tell me what you find most challenging when it comes to keeping yourself motivated to be successful?

No to get stuck in the low moments.  Always pressing forward to do better, because our listeners deserve it.

If an aspiring radio show host asked you for some advice, what would you say is the most important thing for them to know is?

Be yourself.  There's something beautiful when you are vulnerable (to a point) and conversational on the air.  Listeners LOVE to know that you're no perfect, you're not polished.  That's how you earn their trust as a listener.

What is your favorite part of being a morning show host?

I get to go home early! :)  There's something fun about a morning show.  you get to help people start their day.  If I can do that by sharing life, playing great music, encouraging someone in their faith all while drinking coffee, it's special when I get to start the day with you!!

When you're not on the radio, what are you doing?

I'm pretty involved with friends and my church.  I love watching the Bruins, Red sox, Patriots with friends.  Playing board games (I'm super competitive).  i absolutely love to cook from scratch using fresh ingredients.  My signature dish is pan-seared salmon with a fresh Mediterranean relish over risotto, mix veggies with almond butter!  i attend Faith Baptist Church in Auburn where I enjoy hanging out with the youth and playing music.

If you had to pick one quote to live your life by, what would it be and why?

It's one of my favorite versus in the Bible "For I know the plans i have for you," says the LORD.  "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope." - Jeremiah 29:11.  I love this because I know that my life has purpose and I get to live that out every single day!!

If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?

I would either like to fly when I can OR become invisible at times.

If you could tell your seven year old self something you know now that you didn't then, what would it be?

Don't be so shy.  Talk to others.

On Average, how many times a week do you hurt yourself trying to dance in the shower?

I have a small shower with a low shower head which seems to move down often hitting me in the head....sooooooo, quite often!!

What's playing on your radio right now?

Lincoln Brewster "There is Power".... (Interesting fun fact.. Lincoln Brewster was "Journey's" front man, Steve Perry's guitarist for a short time in the 90's.)
